Galway Hurling Star Ollie Canning announces retirement...

Galway's Ollie Canning looks certain to call time on his 13-year inter-county hurling career.

Canning addressed his Galway team-mates in the dressing room after last Sunday's gut-wrenching All-Ireland SHC quarter-final defeat to Tipperary because he felt it would be the last opportunity he would get to do so.

Canning began his Galway career as a half forward before making the switch to corner back in 2001 when the Tribesmen lost the All-Ireland final to Tipperary. He won four All-Stars in the position in 2001, '03, '05 and '09.

Canning never won a senior All-Ireland medal with Galway, but did win an All-Ireland Minor medal in 1994, and an All-Ireland Under-21 medal in 1996. Canning also lined out for Connacht in the inter-provincial hurling competition. He captured two Railway Cup medals in 1999 and 2004. He has also won three All-Ireland club medals with Portumna, with whom he will continue to play. He actually retired from inter-county hurling in 2006, but returned a year later and was playing as well as he ever did in recent seasons.

But he has now admitted that he is unlikely to wear the maroon jersey again.

His move towards retirement will leave a huge hole in the Galway panel. Cheers Ollie for your outstanding service to Galway hurling. Best of Luck, whether or not you have played your last inter-county match.
