Where is Sam Maguire going in 2009?...

During the Senior Football Championship this summer, I was running an opinion poll on where the Sam Maguire Cup would be heading this year. At the time of this posting, there were four teams left in the Championship - Tyrone, Kerry, Cork and Meath.

Now, it is time to end this poll and provide the results.

Question: Where is Sam Maguire going this year to end the Decade?
  • Tyrone, to hold onto it (35%)
  • One of the other only holders of the 2000's - Kerry-Galway-Armagh (26%)
  • Other, new county in this decade (39%)

Interestingly enough, the largest percentage (at 39%) is for a new team in this decade to win Sam Maguire. This is still possible (as of the semi-final stages). Both Cork and Meath haven't won the Championship in this decade, though they each have contested a final - Cork lost to Kerry in 2007 and Meath lost to Galway in 2001.

Not far behind at 35%, many have the opinion that Tyrone will retain Sam Maguire this year. Last year, they defeated Kerry in the final.

At the lowest percentage (26%), many that took the poll thought that one of the other teams other than Tyrone (Kerry, Galway, Armagh) that won an All-Ireland SFC in the 2000's would win it this year. Kerry being part of the four teams left, can still prove this opinion correct.

The All-Ireland semi-finals - Cork v Tyrone is on August 23rd and Kerry v Meath is on August 30th.

Well, come Final day on September 20th, we will know who's opinion was the correct one!
