Donegal tried hard but it was Down who recorded a victory at Letterkenny.
Aidan Clarke netted in the tenth minute to propel the Christy Ring Cup semi-finalists into a 1-12 to 0-6 interval lead, with Gareth Johnston, Aaron O'Prey, Kevin McGarry and Brendan Ennis also amongst the Ardsmen's scorers.
