Limerick and Wexford meet in the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Qualifiers Phase 2, on Saturday July 11 at Wexford Park. This clash will be a far cry from when these two sides met in the 1996 All-Ireland final, which Wexford won.
Limerick boss Justin McCarthy has left stalwart attacker Ollie Moran out of his starting line-up. Pat Tobin has quit the Treatymen's panel. Maybe due to the fact that he didn't get a run out in the Munster semi-final replay defeat to Waterford. Paul Browne and Denis Moloney also lose out, with Wayne McNamara, Donncha Sheehan and Gavin O'Mahony all getting the nod.
Limerick Team:
B Murray; D Reale, S Lucey, M O'Riordan; S Hickey, B Geary, M Foley; G O'Mahony, D O'Grady; W McNamara, J Ryan, N Moran; D Sheehan, D Breen, A O'Shaughnessy
Wexford Manager Colm Bonnar has included Darren Stamp and Keith Rossiter in his team for this qualifier clash. Both players return from long-term injuries, with David O’Connor and Michael Jacob making way at full-back and wing-back respectively.
Eanna Martin takes the place of Stephen Banville at full-forward, after he was ruled out with glandular fever. PJ Nolan and Harry Kehoe also come into the side.
Wexford Team:
D Fitzhenry; M Travers, P Roche, K Rossiter; D Stamp, P Kehoe, C Kenny; H Kehoe, D Lyng; PJ Nolan, W Doran, R Jacob; D Redmond, E Martin, S Doyle.
I don't think either team has a chance of going much further in this year's championship. So, I have a difficult time calling this one. However, I think the Slaneysiders have a little more determination and hurling pride to avoid going into a relegation battle to stay up in the Liam McCarthy Cup for next year. Yes, Limerick are a proud hurling county too, but they will fall a little short in this encounter.
